Overview of Shaken Baby Syndrome

We have done a few articles on shaken baby syndrome here.  I happened across his article which explains what exactly occurs when you shake a baby and why it can cause so many problems, up to and including death.

The point that I like from the article is that every parent needs to have a plan in place for what to do when their baby starts crying.  Think about what you would do if you have had just the worst and most stressful day of your life and you come home and your baby will not stop crying.  A parent always needs to be sure that they can cope and safely take care of their children.  If you cannot, seek help immediately.  There are many crisis lines out there if you do not have friends or family members that are willing to help.  Shaking a baby even for one second can cause permanent damage.

Gordon Collins-Faunce Admits to Baby Murder

Gordon Collins-Faunce

Baby Ethan, 10-weeks-old, died recently due to abuse by his father.  The father, Gordon Collins-Faunce, 23, admits to grabbing him by the head and throwing him in a chair.

The really sad part about this story is that the abuse should have been caught 6 weeks earlier when Ethan suffered a broken arm.  As I am sure you know, it is pretty hard to break a 4-week-old’s bones.  They are quite elastic.  So, the hospital should definitely have called the authorities and reported that there was a suspicion of child abuse here.  Ethan had a twin brother and half-sister who do not appear to have been abused.

Billings Baby Doing Well

The baby boy who was abandoned in a Billings hospital bathroom is doing well.  He is now 6-months-old and has been adopted by a loving family.  He was actually the first baby in the state’s history to be legally given up under the 11-year-old Safe Haven laws in Montana.

I was surprised to read in this article that the state does not mandate that parents give infants to a person at Safe Haven locations.  So, leaving this child in the hospital bathroom was just fine.  Pardon the opinion, but that seems ridiculous to me.  What if this baby was left somewhere at which he was not found for hours?  OR what if he was found by a non-staff member who wished to harm him?  Not smart.

This article continues with some arguments against Safe Haven laws which I found to be quite entertaining, but also ridiculous.  I have read more stories about infant abandonment than any one person should and I can say with certainty that Safe Haven is necessary and it saves lives.

Girl Found in Parking Lot, Parents Killed

A little girl was found in car in a shopping center in San Jose after police responded to reports of gunshots.  Her mother and father were found dead at the scene.  Police believe the two were killed by murder-suicide.  The little girl is fine physically.  No names were included in the article so that the family could be notified by police and the little girl could be placed.

Not much more info, but the article can be found here.

Milton Galarza-Rojas Dies from Overdose

Oscar Rivera

This article is really short, but I thought the little boy still deserved mentioning.  A 9-month-old baby was rushed to the hospital having difficulty breathing and he later died.  Doctors found heroin and cocaine in his little body.

Oscar Rivera, 34, has been arrested and will face a murder charge among other counts.

Missouri Hoping to Expand Safe Haven

There is currently a bill on the table in Missouri that would expand the state’s safe haven window from 5 days to 45 days, which is the national average.

I am glad that the state is trying to do something with this, but I am still confused as to why any state would think such a short window would be a good idea.  Odds are, even if a mother does drop her newborn off after an age limit, she will not be criminally prosecuted.  That is not the issue.  The problem is, a mother might get scared that her child is outside the window and be too afraid to take the baby to a safe haven.  This could lead to that child being placed in a dangerous situation.

As always, the main problem is that there is no funding to promote these laws.  There is no need for a parent to fear utilizing safe haven as long as the baby has been reasonably well cared for.  I wish there was a magical solution to this problem and I could make sure every single parent knew the facts.

For now, please read this article.

One More Way to Keep Babies Safe

Today I have a short article for you, but I really liked it.

The catalyst for the article was a recent newborn drop-off at a Las Vegas hospital.  Everything went smoothly and the baby is now in safe hands.  The article reminded me of something I may have mentioned here on One By One Safe Haven before.  If a parent is unable or unwilling to transport their newborn to a safe haven location, there is another alternative.  All you have to do is dial 911 and an ambulance will come pick up the baby for you and transport it to an approved location.

There are so many ways to give up an unwanted baby, I wish we were not still seeing them end up in dumpsters.  Have a comment?  Leave it below.

Important Information for Louisianans

LOUISIANA RESIDENTS!  Please read this article.  It is a comprehensive look at Safe Haven guidelines and procedures in your state and could very well help you save a baby and protect yourself from criminal prosecution.

I do not think anyone ever plans to murder or abandon a baby.  It is too horrible to consider that someone would want to cause harm to a completely innocent life.  Unfortunately, sometimes people are scared or nervous or simply do not know that there are alternatives.  Not knowing what to do is not an excuse to a judge though.  Start a dialogue with your children or other young people in your family, as well.  Consider it your good deed for the day!

Infant Murders in Iowa

The article below points out that two of the atrocious recent cases of infanticide both occurred in Iowa.

Although the Safe Haven laws have been in effect since 2001, the last baby saved by Safe Haven in Iowa was in 2009.  This actually makes sense.  If stories of safely relinquished infants had been in the news, perhaps these tragedies would not have occurred.  It is not really an excuse though.  Safe Haven should be mentioned at all high schools and by parents in all households.  It is unfortunate that most states cannot afford to promote them.

Court in Session on 2009 Infanticide

Juana Valencia, 21

Today’s horrific tale of infanticide actually happened in 2009, but I do not believe we reported on it and the court case has recently started.

Juana Valencia, 21, was in high school at the time of the incident.  She gave birth at work and put the baby in a plastic bag and threw it in a dumpster behind the restaurant.  I wish this was the worst part.  The article says she did know about Safe Haven laws.  Personally, I think this should be a major factor in deciding her sentence.  Knowledge of an alternative even if she was a scared teenager, is much worse than having never heard of Safe Haven.
