Aiden McGrew, Killed by Dog

Aiden McGrew

I am sure everyone in the country has heard the story of little Aiden McGrew recently.  He was the 2-month-old baby that was ultimately killed by a dog in South Carolina.

This is particularly tragic for me as a resident of South Carolina.  It also makes me especially angry.  I can think of no reason why a parent would leave a baby unprotected in the living room while they slept in the bedroom.  I am further dumbfounded when you add to that a dog that the family had only had a short time and had no way of knowing whether it was safe to have around children.  Well, both the baby boy and the dog are now dead and the sleepy father is being charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

Protect your children.  NEVER leave your child unsupervised with a dog.

Marchella Brett Pierce Starved to Death

Marchella Brett Pierce

I typically read so many articles about crimes against children that it takes a lot to really disturb me when I’m doing research for One By One.  I sort of expect to be sad and can prepare for what I will read.

This article really got to me though.  A little girl was starved to death.  I really cannot even write about this one, folks.  I do recommend you read the article.  If nothing else, at least getting her story out gives little Marchella a little bit of justice.

PLEASE seek help if you are having trouble caring for your children.  There IS assistance out there.

Baby Left Alone in Apartment

This story is a new kind of sad.  A two-month-old baby girl was left alone in an apartment for up to 3 days when police finally found her.  Her parents had been arrested the day before, but neighbors say they heard no noise in the apartment for a few days prior to that.  The only reason police even showed up to the apartment was because the mother, Kimberly Whitcomb, 20, finally told them the baby was alone the day AFTER her arrest.  At first, she had told police that the child was with a babysitter.

The really sad part of the story is that the parents were arrested for panhandling.  They had both been arrested for the same issue half a dozen times before.  Also, when police were in their apartment, there was nothing edible in the place and an empty can of formula.

As any parent knows, sometimes hard choices have to be made for the sake of our children.  Safe Haven laws were set up for parents who are unwilling or UNABLE to care for their children.  There are many more resources out there, of course, like state aid or soup kitchens, but if a parent ever seriously considers whether they are caring for a child adequately… please remember that there are many people who wish every day for a baby to care for.

Child Neglect has Dire Consequences

I think anyone familiar with the history of Safe Haven remembers Baby Mary.  Her abuse and death led Pennsylvania to pass the laws to protect babies from suffering her same fate.

More specifically, she was from Northumberland County.  A decade after her death, we have another story from her home that is also tragic.  A baby girl named Aneela was left in the care of her grandmother while her mother got her nails done among other things.  The grandmother did not check on the little girl for approximately 19 hours.  During this time, the temperature rose to 90 degrees due to a space heater and the baby perished from hyperthermia.

The grandmother, mother, and father are all facing charges of involuntary manslaughter in connection with baby Aneela’s death.  I know when parents give their children up to a safe haven, many people are disappointed that they were not able to take on the responsibility.  It think it goes without saying that this is better than what happened to little Aneela.

Child Left in Car After Crash

To switch things up a bit, today’s article does not pertain to Safe Haven Laws exactly, but it does deal with child abandonment.

A man named Lynn Dexter Bailey Jr. was arrested for leaving his toddler at the scene of a crash.  Police were called to an area in Chesterfield, VA to investigate a suspicious vehicle.  When Bailey noticed the police car, he sped away and crashed his car into a ditch.  Both he and the mother fled the vehicle leaving the child behind.

He will face charges of child neglect and eluding police among other things.

If they care so little about the well-being of this child, perhaps a Safe Haven should have been considered when he was born.

Parents Charged for Leaving Baby by Church Dumpster

I have an update on a story I wrote about not long ago.
There is an end to the story of the baby that was left by a dumpster behind a church.  The parents have been found are being charged with child abandonment and child neglect.
I am so glad that they were found.  I cannot be fully content until I hear some sort of decent justification for why they chose not to take the baby INSIDE the church… but this is certainly better than if they had never been found and brought to justice.  Cheers to those who helped find them.
