Did the System Fail This Boy?

There is a major problem happening with our child protection system in this country.  Well, it is possibly that this problem has always existed.  Read this article for specifics, but many children are killed each year that had prior incidents of child abuse that DSS was alerted to.  I can certainly understand that some slip through the cracks and we want to be certain before taking custody from a parent.  Yet, that is a far cry from one little boy who had eight prior visits from child protection workers responding to reports of child abuse.  The ninth incident killed him.  There should have never been a ninth incident.  The state should have saved this little boy.

The really sad thing is that the only people who pay for these mistakes are the children.  No one was punished for not following up with this little boy.  Help put a stop to child abuse.  If you see something, say something.

Trial of Linda Wilborn Begins, Charged with Murder of One Twin

Linda Wilborn

The trial of Linda Wilborn, 33, began just a few days ago.  If you do no remember, she was the mom who is being charged with murder and child abuse.

One 22-month-old twin died from a ruptured heart.  Doctors found old and new rib fractures on the little girl.  The other twin, a little boy, survived despite having a skull fracture.  Wilborn has other children that were put in protective custody pending the outcome of her trial.  She has plead not guilty to the charges.

Father Fractures Baby’s Skull

Baby Riley (father inset)

I have another sad one for you, readers.

An adorable little baby girl, Riley Ryon, was only 3-months-old when she died recently.  Cause?  A 2 ½ inch skull fracture caused by her father.  When Christopher Scott Ryon, 27, could not get her to stop crying, he punched her in the head.  She was found face down in her crib when her mother came home for lunch.

For today’s article, I want you to remind everyone you know that there are always other options besides killing a little baby AND I also strongly urge new parents to take parenting classes.  Being a new parent can be very overwhelming.  A lot of parents get very close to hurting their children.  Please do not let it get this far.  Ask for help.

Lindsey Lowe: Killed Newborn Twins

Lindsey Lowe, 25

As I begin to write about today’s article, I am very much at a loss for words.  There have been very few occasions when words fail me, but this is such a heart-breaking story.

Lindsey Lowe, 25, gave birth to twin boys a few weeks ago.  She was at home when she went into labor and when the first baby boy was delivered he began to cry, as babies do.  Lowe was afraid her parents would hear and put her hand over the boy’s mouth… until he died.  When the second twin was delivered… she did the same thing.  She then hid the tiny bodies of both newborns in a laundry basket.  I do not have any idea what her plan was at that point, but her father found them in the basket some time later.

No one had any ideas as to why she felt so strongly that her parents could not find out.  They are a religious family who looked to their pastor to help them through the police investigation.  Surely they could have helped her make a decision about the babies that would have had a much better result.  Safe. Haven.

Laquasia Wright: Catalyst for Curriculum Changes

A few weeks ago, I am sure you all remember the teenager Laquasia Wright, 18, who threw her infant down a garbage chute.  Now school administrators in the area are considering making sex education mandatory to prevent further tragedies like this one.

It is far too late for this girl who is being charged with attempted second degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child, but it may help many young girls in the future.  It seems strange to me that there are still schools in this country that are not teaching sex education.  History has proven time and time again that only teaching abstinence or ignoring the issue entirely is not an effective way of preventing teenage pregnancy.  I very much hope that the school district does follow through on this.  I hope all school districts will learn from this issue and step up to protect children.

Casey Anthony Makes Some Question Age Limits in Safe Haven Laws

In the wake of the Casey Anthony case many people are questioning the age limits that are stipulated in Safe Haven Laws.

What do you think?  Should all children be accepted at Safe Haven locations?  Keep in mind what happened in my own home state of Nebraska when all minors were accepted.  Many parents dropped their children off that were as old as 16.  I cannot imagine the irreparable damage this could do to a teen’s psyche.  A child of less than 30 days old would not even be able to remember his or her birth parents, but what of a teenager who had spent a big chunk of their lives with that parent?  Can anyone picture being able to deal with that?  I know I couldn’t.  Yet, a higher age limit might cut down on child abuse and neglect cases.  Does saving a child from physical damage surmount the need to protect them from emotional damage?

Baby Abandoned in Hospital Bathroom Dies

Oh no.  A situation I reported just a few weeks ago went from bad to couldn’t-be-worse.

The baby that was left in a hospital bathroom has died.  When found abandoned he was already suffering from low blood pressure and brain damage.  Unfortunately, he was unable to pull through.  The mother, rightfully so, may now face a charge of murder for the incident.

I may have said this before, but this truly may be the saddest case I have seen regarding child abandonment.  She could have left the child with any staff member of that hospital and both she and the baby would be fine today.  Instead she chose possibly the worst option and just put him in the trashcan right there in the hospital… obviously carelessly enough to cause brain damage.  All because she did not want her mother to find out she was pregnant.  I cannot think of anything more selfish.

Julianne McCrery Kills Child Instead of Utilizing Safe Haven

Julianne McCrery

Although this is not a story of the abandonment of an infant, I wanted to share it with you anyway.  This adorable 6 year old boy was found dead on a dirt road in Maine.  Police were suspicious when no children matching his description were reported missing.  This is very unusual.

It turns out that he was not reported missing because his own mother, Julianne McCrery, was responsible for his death by asphyxiation.  She had even called his school every day to tell them that he was sick before she was apprehended.

Although a 6 year old is not covered by Safe Haven Laws, that does not mean there are no options out there for parents incapable of caring for older children.  There are many people willing to care for children of all ages, you just have to ask for help.  PLEASE ask for help.

Should Child Abusers be Prosecuted under Safe Haven?

This article (click here) is scary to think about and brings up some rather controversial points.  South Carolina’s current Safe Haven laws allow a parent complete anonymity when giving up their children as long as that child is unharmed when they are dropped off.  This prevents a lot of parents from giving up children that already show signs of abuse due to fear of criminal prosecution.  South Carolina is considering abandoning this stipulation.  This means that any child who has been abused would still be protected under Safe Haven laws and the parents would not be punished.

This seems like a terrible idea until you look closer.  Yes, these parents would go unpunished for abuse of children, but they would also be more willing to give up their parental rights and place them in a safe home where no further abuse would happen.  So, the trade-off is criminals go unpunished… but the abuse stops.  What do you think?

National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April

Who knew April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month?  We did!  But somehow, our post didn’t make it to publish!  Nevertheless, Child abuse prevention doesn’t stop in April so we wanted to pass along this information anyway.

Today’s article reviews how local agencies are raising awareness for this issue.  It also reviews a bit of the history of the Abandoned Infant Protection Act which was, of course, important legislation for those committed to ending child abuse.  The article was created specifically for those in the New York area, but there are many ways you can help if you are outside the Big Apple.

Here is the website for Child Welfare Information Gateway which has lots of information currently available for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
