Billings Baby Doing Well

The baby boy who was abandoned in a Billings hospital bathroom is doing well.  He is now 6-months-old and has been adopted by a loving family.  He was actually the first baby in the state’s history to be legally given up under the 11-year-old Safe Haven laws in Montana.

I was surprised to read in this article that the state does not mandate that parents give infants to a person at Safe Haven locations.  So, leaving this child in the hospital bathroom was just fine.  Pardon the opinion, but that seems ridiculous to me.  What if this baby was left somewhere at which he was not found for hours?  OR what if he was found by a non-staff member who wished to harm him?  Not smart.

This article continues with some arguments against Safe Haven laws which I found to be quite entertaining, but also ridiculous.  I have read more stories about infant abandonment than any one person should and I can say with certainty that Safe Haven is necessary and it saves lives.

A baby was abandoned outside of a home in Washington D.C. in January.  The cause of death has been ruled a homicide due to hypothermia.  Police have received many tips since then, but none have led to an arrest.  Someone out there knows what happened to this baby and she did not deserve such treatment.  Do you know someone who was pregnant that lived in the area in January and now cannot account for the child’s whereabouts?  Contact the police immediately.

Little Girl Left in Car While Father in Jail

Noe Alejandro Martinez, 23

It has been a long time since I saw one of these.  A father left his 9-month-old infant in a car with no ventilation while he went inside a jail to retrieve his possessions.  A security guard found the poor little girl crying and sweating and broke a window to get her out.  The father, Noe Alejandro Martinez, 23, was arrested at the scene.  Yes, he not only left her in the car… he left her in a car at a jail.

I had no idea there was anyone left in the world who did not know it’s a bad idea to leave a baby in a car.  I am flabbergasted.  The last story I saw had a mother who was under the influence and forgot the child was in there.  The father in this story has no such excuse.  He knowingly and willingly decided that it would be too much hassle to bring the little girl on his errand with him or find a babysitter.  Thank goodness someone found her before permanent damage was done.  She was released into the custody of the mother, but CPS is investigating.

Parking Garage Mom Competent to Stand Trial

Sonia Hermosillo

Sonia Hermosillo, 31, has been found competent to stand trial for the death of her son.

If you remember, a few months ago we reported on this here at One By One Safe Haven.  This was the mother who threw her baby boy from the fourth story of a hospital parking garage.  Many claimed that her actions clearly pointed to postpartum, while others thought that because she removed the infant’s medically necessary helmet and the act was premeditated she was sane.

Well whether or not she was legally insane will have to be decided by the jury, but from a psychological standpoint, the trial will proceed.

Time Served: Justice for Shaken Baby?

Shirley Ree Smith

Shirley Ree Smith’s long court battle has finally come to an end.  She spent over 8 years in prison for shaking her grandchild which resulted in his death.  The strange thing is, this article shows that there was definitely reasonable doubt over not only whether she did it, but also whether the baby’s death was caused by shaking at all.

Smith had no prior criminal record and has not committed any criminal acts since her release from prison in 2008.  Now, of course, the vast majority of people who commit a crime will not recidivate or commit another crime, but I cannot help but consider 8 years in prison to be a miscarriage of justice when we do not even know the cause of little Etzel’s death.  Agree or Disagree?

Teliajah Brown: Murdered by Mother’s Boyfriend

Teliajah Brown

I have yet ANOTHER case of a child murdered by the mother’s boyfriend.  Is this some insane trend we are seeing here?  3-year-old Teliajah Brown died due to blunt force trauma while in the care of Shonta Barnhill-Sherrod.  He claims that the death was accidental and happened when they were wrestling.

I am just so confused by how many of these I have seen lately.  Are these moms just showing bad judgment in who they bring around their children?  Are all of these deaths coincidence?  How long should you know someone before you allow them to be alone with your children?  I would love to hear some thoughts on this.

Baby Left to Die in Louisiana

Sabrina Maiden

A baby was found dead in a swampy area in Louisiana.  This story has just about every bad thing that could have led up to this murder: domestic dispute, drug abuse, firearms, and a poor environment.  I will let you read all of the details, but basically 22-year-old Sabrina Maiden has been charged with first-degree murder for laying her son in a field and leaving him to die.

I do not know how many times I have said this, but it is clearly not reaching some people.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ABANDON/HARM/MURDER YOUR BABY!  There are Safe Haven locations where you can drop them off 100% anonymously.  100% anonymously means you do not even have to give your name.  Nothing.

Shaken Baby Dies 5 Years Later

Brayden Grusman-Buckmaster

Brayden Grusman-Buckmaster died recently at the age of 5, but the cause of his death happened many years before.  His death was ruled a homicide caused by being shaken when he was just 6-weeks-old.

The boy had many health related issues caused by the shaking, including blindness.  Although it was ruled to be murder, no one is being held responsible for his death.  His adoptive parents are not happy with this decision.  Rightfully so, I say.  It is an interesting case, though.  How much time has to pass before someone is no longer responsible for murder?  Is there a limit?  We would love to hear your thoughts.

Please read about Brayden here.

Do You Trust Your Babysitter?

Jayden Brianne Turner

21-year-old Mark Edward Vaughn was arrested in Los Angeles County for the murder of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old daughter, Jayden Brianne Turner.  Although he has insisted that she fell and hit her head on a carpeted floor, the coroner said that this story is not consistent with her injuries and ruled her death a homicide.

I know it difficult to be a parent, but this is no excuse for leaving your children with someone unable to care for them.  We have reported on several articles lately where the parent left an infant in the care of someone who is now being charged with murder.  Even if this is not something you can be criminally prosecuted for, I bet every one of these parents will regret their decision for the rest of their lives.

Do You Sleep with Your Baby?

Today’s article is not about a baby that was abandoned or abused or even unwanted.  Yet, since our main priority is to make sure babies are kept safe, I wanted to be sure to talk about this issue anyway.

Co-sleeping.  Please don’t do it.  Little Alfie Smith died just a few weeks after his injuries sustained by his father falling asleep on him.  I know most people think it is harmless and they could never hurt their baby, but it’s not and it can.  Young Dale Anderson did not think it would happen either.  Now he will have to live the rest of his life knowing that he killed his child.   I found a great website that provides lots of information about this practice: kidshealth.org.  While there appear to be some benefits to co-sleeping, when one of the possible consequences is death, do you want to take the risk?
