Do You Sleep with Your Baby?

Today’s article is not about a baby that was abandoned or abused or even unwanted.  Yet, since our main priority is to make sure babies are kept safe, I wanted to be sure to talk about this issue anyway.

Co-sleeping.  Please don’t do it.  Little Alfie Smith died just a few weeks after his injuries sustained by his father falling asleep on him.  I know most people think it is harmless and they could never hurt their baby, but it’s not and it can.  Young Dale Anderson did not think it would happen either.  Now he will have to live the rest of his life knowing that he killed his child.   I found a great website that provides lots of information about this practice: kidshealth.org.  While there appear to be some benefits to co-sleeping, when one of the possible consequences is death, do you want to take the risk?

Anitra Hicks Charged with Murder of Infant

Anitra Hicks

Anitra Hicks, 18, has been charged with the murder of her infant son.

She is currently under house arrest while she awaits trial.  She is allowed to attend school and see her lawyer.  I would like to hear your thoughts on this.  Personally, I am a big fan of house arrest for people who are not flight risks.  It saves the state money and helps to not stigmatize the offender before he or she is proven guilty.

Anyway, it appears that Hicks gave birth in her bathroom and then threw the baby into the trash.  A trash collector was the one who found the boy and reported it to the police.  What is very strange to me is that she is described as a “slight” girl, but even her pastor said she never appeared to be pregnant.  I do not understand how this could be.  It is so sad that she did not think she could talk to anyone about it, did not think she had any other options, and was so close to graduating high school.

Another example, folks!  Teach your children about Safe Haven!

Mother Charged for Drug Abuse During Pregnancy

This is a very short article, but it brings up a point I do not believe we have talked about here at One By One.

A mother Antoinette Franklin Newsome, 33, has been arrested for the murder of her newborn baby.  This is not the typical story we see involving a desperate mother or a dumpster, though.  The baby died because of respiratory impairment due to the mother’s drug use while pregnant.  He also had drugs in his system when he died just a few hours after birth.

Safe Haven laws would have been a big help in this particular situation, but if anyone was unaware, there are also a lot of free services that can help you if you have a drug problem.  Especially if you are a pregnant woman, please seek help.  Not only are you jeopardizing your health and the health of your child, you could end up like Newsome and possibly go to prison for life.  Think about it.

Girl Found in Parking Lot, Parents Killed

A little girl was found in car in a shopping center in San Jose after police responded to reports of gunshots.  Her mother and father were found dead at the scene.  Police believe the two were killed by murder-suicide.  The little girl is fine physically.  No names were included in the article so that the family could be notified by police and the little girl could be placed.

Not much more info, but the article can be found here.

Milton Galarza-Rojas Dies from Overdose

Oscar Rivera

This article is really short, but I thought the little boy still deserved mentioning.  A 9-month-old baby was rushed to the hospital having difficulty breathing and he later died.  Doctors found heroin and cocaine in his little body.

Oscar Rivera, 34, has been arrested and will face a murder charge among other counts.

Sharon Worthy Sentenced

Curtis Copeland and Sharon Worthy

Sharon Worthy, 22 has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in the death of her 3-year-old son.  It was actually her boyfriend who killed the boy (Curtis Copeland, 28, was given life in prison), but there appear to have been several points in this story at which Worthy could have saved her son by either taking him away from Copeland or calling the police.

Among other injuries, the little boy Jesse suffered a broken pelvis, broken vertebra, and a head injury.

Another Abandoned in Mississippi

Another baby was abandoned behind a church in Mississippi.  Not only was the baby not brought inside the church, but churches are not even approved safe haven locations.

I could see how someone who is unfamiliar with Safe Haven might think they could turn to their church for help.  This is not hard to fathom.  The hard part to identify with is that this parent left the child in a cat bed behind the church where very few people may have happened past.  It is extremely good luck that a parishioner found the baby and called the police.  The baby is now safe and will be placed by an adoption agency soon.

Jesse Joe Hernandez: Put to Death for Crimes Against Children

Jesse Joe Hernandez

Eleven years ago Jesse Joe Hernandez murdered a 10-month-old little boy and also abused his sister.  He was just recently put to death by lethal injection in Texas.

Whether or not you agree with capital punishment is not the issue.  I would just like everyone to read this article and keep in mind what happened to this baby.  I do suggest parental guidance on this one, readers.  This baby suffered some terrible injuries.  Unlike most of our articles, Hernandez was not the boy’s father, but there are others out there like him.  Keeping talking about Safe Haven and save a life!

Safe Haven Has Major Success in Florida

Oh my gosh!  This article made me grin.

Guess how many infants have been saved by Safe Haven in just Florida alone since the laws were adopted.  You will never guess.  I could have never guessed!  169 baby boys and girls!  That is truly amazing.  169 babies in less than 12 years!

The number has unfortunately dwindled down to zero in the past few years, but I commend every citizen in Florida that has helped to spread the word about infant protection laws.  This made my day.

Missouri Hoping to Expand Safe Haven

There is currently a bill on the table in Missouri that would expand the state’s safe haven window from 5 days to 45 days, which is the national average.

I am glad that the state is trying to do something with this, but I am still confused as to why any state would think such a short window would be a good idea.  Odds are, even if a mother does drop her newborn off after an age limit, she will not be criminally prosecuted.  That is not the issue.  The problem is, a mother might get scared that her child is outside the window and be too afraid to take the baby to a safe haven.  This could lead to that child being placed in a dangerous situation.

As always, the main problem is that there is no funding to promote these laws.  There is no need for a parent to fear utilizing safe haven as long as the baby has been reasonably well cared for.  I wish there was a magical solution to this problem and I could make sure every single parent knew the facts.

For now, please read this article.
